Sean Forbes - Deaf musician

The 28-year-old deaf rapper and songwriter from metro Detroit has landed a contract with Web Entertainment, the Ferndale, Michigan production company and label that helped break Eminem.
Sean Forbes has been 90% deaf since infancy, but that never stopped him from loving music. Both of his parents are musicians who played Motor City music in their home while Sean enjoyed the beats and vibrations from the music his ears could not hear, but his body could feel.
His MySpace Music page says Forbes is “an accomplished and passionate drummer, rhythm pours out of him, when he breathes, walks, types at his keyboard or hits his drums. Music is in his blood, his cells; it’s just the way he is.”

We are pleased to announce that this year we are able to provide a FM broadcast system for those who are hard of hearing in connection with the Old Town Cape Tunes at Twilight concert series.  This will allow a person with hearing loss to use a small portable FM radio along with the use of headphones to enjoy the music. Doing so allows them to set the volume at a comfortable level, while allowing for minimal interference from background noise.

These types of assistive  devices are common in public areas, such as; churches, theaters, and concert halls. Look for this kind of logo to know where these type assistive devices are used.

It was a great day in Perry County for senior citizens on Thursday, April 29, 2010. That is if they attended the Wellness Fair in Altenburg,MO at the Perry County Senior Center. Joyce Hill-Cooley, BC-HIS,RN,COHC and franchisee manager of Miracle-Ear Centers, is shown given a free hearing screening to one of the attendants. Joyce was happy to help put together the fair and offer her knowledge and services to the local senior citizens. There were also other services available such as glucose tests, tai chi, blood pressure tests,a pharmacist to answer medication questions, and advice for paperwork. Everyone enjoyed a great lunch and to top it off Miracle-Ear raffled off a door prize. We are looking forward to another Wellness fair at the end of May at the Perry County Senior Center.

According to a recent post on Lifehacker, you should clean your Earbuds for both better sound and better hygiene.

“Earbuds can get dirty surprisingly fast, especially if you use in-ear earbuds—the sealed design increases the heat in the ear canal and leads to more ear wax and oils accumulating on the bud. You can’t just dunk them in water and shake them around however, especially if you spend big bucks on them to please your audiophile ears.”

From there they recommend several options of gentle cleansers, but surprisingly, they also recommend using a dry soft bristle toothbrush, the very same method we recommend for cleaning hearing aids.

Study in Denmark finds that the combination of therapy and hearing aids is extremely effective.

The study performed by the Center for Assistive Devices and Communication, or the CHC, in Denmark, found many benefits for it’s participants in the study. Included were; better sleep, improved concentration, and increased happiness. By combining a treatment of tinnitus therapy and properly fit hearing aids, patients had marked improvements. One hundred tinnitus suffers took part in this study over a two year period. They reported emotional improvements, such as a decreased frustration levels, and more enjoyment of life in general; along with improvements of cognitive functions, such as better concentration. They also noted less problems and work and home, along with better sleep.

After playing Heavy Metal music for 35 years, it is no surprise that Metallica drummer, Lars Ulrich, is a tinnitus sufferer and has hearing loss. He cautions young and old alike to watch the volume of the noise around you. As a musician myself, playing drums since I was eight years old, I know first hand that damage can come from even leisurely involvement in these activities. Wearing ear plugs, especially ones made for musicians, can be a huge advantage in preserving your natural hearing!

German scientists have proposed a new hypothesis on Monday in regards to tinnitus (ringing in the ear) and music. Although, the European Union health panel became concerned for the hearing of those living in industrialized countries (listening to mp3 players at loud volumes for long durations), these German scientists are saying listening to music can actually help bring back hearing.

The EU is logical in their concern for hearing loss and tinnitus which can be caused by loud music but according to redOrbit, music lovers can still listen to their favorite music and help improve their hearing. However, that music has to be altered to allow improvement. Scientists are saying that the only thing they would have to do is strip their music of the sound frequencies which match the individual’s tinnitus frequency.

Since early November, Miracle-Ear employees have been visiting various elementary, middle, and high schools in the Cape Girardeau and Jackson area in order to teach children more about their hearing. The schools that have been visited so far include North Elementary, Jefferson Elementary, the Jackson Middle School Health Fair, Jackson High School, and Deer Creek Christian Academy.
